If there’s one makeup item that is guaranteed to be in makeup collection at all times; it is this setting spray. I have loved it ever since I first tried it back in 2016. (This post has been rewritten in 2024) It has come up time and time again in previous blog posts, so it was definitely time to shine.
This is my Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray Review.
What Is It?
Let’s start at the beginning. I know when I was first delving into the beauty world, I had no idea what a setting spray was, and no idea if I needed it or not. In the end I decided to give it a whirl, and it’s safe to say that I didn’t look back. Anyway, enough backstories. What is a setting spray? A setting spray is a liquid formula, packaged in a spray bottle, that is designed to keep your makeup in place and looking fresh.
The All Nighter claims to lock makeup in place for 16 hours, without melting, fading or settling into fine lines. Which sounds like the dream, but does it live up to these claims?
How To Use It
I remember when I first tried this, and being so scared to is it. It was mainly because I didn’t want to do it wrong. Which I now realise there isn’t really a right or wrong way to use a setting spray. To use it you need to give the bottle a shake and then spray over the face. The official instructions are to: mist the face 2-4 times in an ‘X’and ‘T’ formation. I used to do this and had no problems at all, but now I just spray left to right whilst gradually moving down.
You can also use this product to wet your eyeshadow brush to get a stronger colour pay off. I did however ruin a shade in my Natasha Denona palette by doing this, but it has worked with other palettes.
My Thoughts
So the big question; does it live up to its claims? To cut a long story short, yes. I love this setting spray, and couldn’t imagine doing my makeup without one.
However I have dry skin and find that when I haven’t prepped my skin properly it can cling to and accentuate any dry patches. Which is something to note if you also have dry skin. If you’re oily or combination, you’ll probably be fine with it. It’s designed to cool the skin, which is why it has the matte finish.
My main reason for loving this is the lasting power. It really does make my makeup last all day. I don’t want to comment on the 16 hour claims, as I’ve never counted the hours, but I do notice a difference in how well my makeup lasts when I wear this, vs when I don’t.
The Price
A full size bottle of the All Nighter Setting Spray will set you back £28, and the travel size costs £15. Which is expensive, but I don’t mind paying, as I can see a notable difference when I wear it. It also really helps that the full size bottle lasts me a really long time.
Pros:
- Your makeup will last all day.
- Prevents: melting, fading and caking.
- Feels lightweight on the skin
- One bottle lasts a long time
Cons:
- Is pricey.
- It’s not the best for dry skin.
So there we have it, that was my Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray review.
