Surviving the 2016 Matte Trenches
Do you know what makes me genuinely happy? The fact that glossy lips are firmly back on trend. I was in the absolute trenches back in 2016, and it took me way longer than I’d like to admit to realise that liquid lipsticks are not my friend. Now that glossy lips are having a massive moment, beauty brands are finally releasing incredibly comfortable lip products, giving us so much more choice.
A few months ago, I picked up this lip oil from e.l.f., and I have really enjoyed using it.
Since I’ve been using it for a solid few months, it’s finally time to sit down and share my thoughts on this e.l.f. Glow Reviver Tinted Lip Oil review.
What Made Me Purchase?
I picked this up on a whim when I found myself wandering down the aisles in Boots scanning for a brand new lip oil. The one I had been using had ran out, and I wanted to try something new.
It came down to a very close call between this e.l.f. option and one from Rimmel, but e.l.f. ultimately won out in the end. What completely sealed the deal for me was the value for money. You get significantly more product for a cheaper price point.
The Price and Size
Since we’re on the topic of value for money, let’s talk about the cost break down. This lip oil retails for an incredibly affordable £8 for 7.6ml of product.
I was so happy with this because lip oils traditionally tend to come in tiny packaging. However, e.l.f. actually gives you slightly more product than other incredibly popular, high end choices on the market.
Here’s looking at you, Dior Lip Glow Oil, with your luxury price tag but only 6ml of product.
Pigmentation and Other Shades
There are seven shades on offer in the permanent lineup, and the one I have is called Coral Fixation.
-
In the Tube: It looks like a very vibrant, punchy orange-coral.
-
On the Lips: It shears out beautifully to give a “barely there” wash of colour. It adds a very subtle, warm orange hint that is incredibly pretty and effortless to wear.
To be completely transparent, Coral Fixation wasn’t actually my very first choice, but my local store only had two shades left in stock. I was a little disappointed initially because I would have preferred the classic pink shade, but I’ve grown to really love how this warm coral looks on me.
A Quick Note on Swatches: I did try my absolute best to photograph an arm swatch for this post, but because the formula sheers out completely, it just looked like a patch of clear gloss on camera! I didn’t see the point of including a blank photo, but just know it is very sheer and universally flattering.
The Hydration and Scent
This formula is truly the best of both worlds because it offers the deep nourishment of a rich lip balm while delivering the ultra glossy finish of a liquid gloss. The formula is packed with skin-loving ingredients:
-
Squalane
-
Apricot Oil
-
Avocado Oil
-
Jojoba Oil
-
Pomegranate Oil
The moment it touches my lips I get an instant hit of hydration, and it feels incredibly comfortable to wear. It is a tiny bit sticky, but it doesn’t bother me in the slightest because it’s only very slight.
The One Downside…
The one thing I really do not enjoy about this product is the scent. In my head, I had imagined it was going to smell tropical and fruity, with distinct sweet notes of pomegranate and apricot. Sadly, it doesn’t. It actually has a very strong, sweet minty scent that I really dislike.
The Applicator and Lasting Time
Can we talk about the doe-foot applicator? It is absolutely huge! The giant size makes application incredibly easy because it completely coats your upper and lower lips quickly with minimal swipes.
Which, to be honest, is a very good thing, because this formula does not last long at all. After about an hour, the hydration remains, but the glossy finish fades so much that I’m left wondering if I ever actually put it on in the first place. While that short wear time is a shame, the fact that the oversized applicator makes it so effortless to reapply completely saves it for me.
Final Thoughts: Is It Worth It?
Overall, I really do enjoy this lip oil. I keep it permanently tossed in my handbag and find myself reaching for it as my daily go-to. I might not be the biggest fan of the minty scent, but thankfully it doesn’t linger for too long.
I don’t mind having to reapply it every hour because it’s just so easy to use. You don’t need a lip liner, and you don’t even need a mirror; you can literally just swipe it on and go. I love how hydrated my lips feel when I wear it, and the high shine finish is stunning. In fact, I’m already thinking about picking up a few more shades—the shade Honey Talks is calling my name!

It’s a shame that you weren’t a fan of the scent, but it sounds like a good tinted lip oil nonetheless x

The formula definitely makes the scent a little more bearable x
I so have been wanting to try this. I think I am the price is right. From what you described there are pros and cons but at the price point the minor cons are not a game changer. Thanks for this review!

I loved wearing liquid lipsticks years ago, but now I’m all for glosses! The Elf lip oil does sound nice, and I’m interested in trying it now!
I have always been so curious about these lip oils! I am so surprised they have a minty scent, I never would have guessed that! I’m not really a fan of that either, so I might hold off to see if they come out with new flavors before trying. Thanks for sharing this great review! 🙂

I totally feel you on the glossy lips trend—it’s like a little win for those of us who struggled with super duper drying liquid lipsticks back then! This lip oil sounds like a total bag essential, especially with that hydration boost and easy application. Even if the minty scent isn’t a fave, it’s good to hear it doesn’t stick around. The shade you picked is so pretty for an everyday look! I might just have to give it a try! x

I think a minty scent would throw me off, too. The color definitely calls for something more tropical or exotic. It is a beautiful color, though!
