Unlike most people, I haven’t been on a huge hair journey. I never dyed my hair a bright colour, or tried any crazy styles. Pretty sure I’ve just realised what my midlife crisis is going to involve. Hair isn’t my forte. I don’t know how to style it, or what to do with it; which means it gets left down all of the time. However I still like to take care of it, and make sure that it’s healthy.
Before we get into things properly, I thought I’d mention my hair type. As everyone’s hair is different, so even though these things work for me, they might not work for you. I have straight hair, that is very thick.
This is how to grow long healthy hair!
Stop Washing Your Hair Everyday
Washing your hair everyday will strip your hair of its natural oils and dry it out. This also helps in the long run, as you will be using less heat overall. I personally like to wash mine every 2-3 days, but I know there are people who go a lot longer. This is where dry shampoo comes in handy, as it can really make a difference on that last day. My go to is Batiste, as it’s the brand I’ve been using since I was in high school.

Find a Good Clarifying Shampoo
A clarifying shampoo gets rid of product build up and grease to leave the hair super clean. As it works a lot better than a regular shampoo it shouldn’t be used more than once or possibly twice a month. This is because it washes the essential natural oils out too, that we’re trying to keep a hold of.
Turn Down the Temperature
This is definitely easier to do in the summer, because as much as I love my hair, I’m not having a cold shower in the middle of Winter. Saying that, washing your hair with cold water makes a huge difference. It keeps your scalp looker cleaner for longer, as it closes the pores making it less vulnerable to oil and dirt. There are huge health benefits for cold showers, but I’m yet to fully take the plunge…
Deep Condition
This is something I swore by when I was blonde, but now I’ve gone back to my natural colour, I’m definitely slacking. I would use a hair mask once a week to keep the colour vibrant, and to retain moisture. Most of the time I’d: put it on, watch some YouTube videos and then wash it off.
Cut Down on Heat
Cutting down on the hair tools can make all of the difference. They may make your hair look good for now, but in the long run it can cause some serious damage. I’m not saying give the tools up for good, but cutting down on how often you use them may be a great start. Also be sure to use a heat protectant.
Be Gentle
This one is probably one of the most important ones, but I feel like it can become overlooked. If you want healthy hair, you need to be careful with how you handle it; especially whilst brushing when it’s wet. Wet hair is extremely fragile, so it’s important to take care whilst brushing it. I always make sure to brush my hair before I get into the shower, as this helps to prevent having to deal with tangles whilst it’s wet.
That was how to grow long and healthy hair.
